The Shell Factory began operation in 1975, in a small 600 square foot warehouse space on Kauai. Initially, the "Factory" was set up as a wholesale enterprise, selling shells (in bulk) to other businesses in the islands. As business progressed, mirrors, night lights, lamps, and magnets -- all decorated with (or made from) shells -- were added to the growing product line. Within a few short years, word got out and the public and visitors to Kauai became interested in what The Shell Factory had to offer.
So ... rounding out the inventory with a quality line of sea related gift items and koa, coral and fresh water pearl jewelry ... The Shell Factory became a retail store just a little over 25 years ago.
The Shell Factory now carries Hawaiian coral jewelry, rare Hawaiian Koa jewelry, fresh water pearl jewelry, island made Raku pottery, glass sculptures and wood art inlay as well as the shell and sea oriented gifts.
